Season Review 2019/20 – U12 Girls

History in the making

What has been a very different 2019/20 season for everyone, has also been a history making one for Fleetdown as a club as we set-up our first girls team in the U12 age bracket.

We recruited a total of 14 players through the season and whilst some of the girls knew each other before we formed, the team has gelled as a single unit more than I could ever have hoped. We have a great balance across the team in terms of experienced and developing players, but each and every one of them is determined, committed and willing to listen and learn. Training sessions have contained lots of hard work and fun, and what has been great to see is the girls adopting those sessions and skills on the pitch.

What a first season it was

We played our first season in Division 3 of the U12 Kent Girls & Ladies Football League (KGLFL), and what a season it’s been, even in the current circumstances.  The abrupt end to the season saw Fleetdown play 14 competitive league games and top the table with 39pts, five points clear of a nearest rival.  We also competed in 2 cup competitions, the first saw a first round exit to a top of the table higher division opponent, but the second cup saw the girls convincingly overcome two higher division opponents as well as progressing through to the semi-finals before the season stopped.

And then the season ended, but…

Whilst the end of the season came around suddenly, Fleetdown were still crowned champions after member clubs voted to decide the season using a points per game format to decide the final outcome of the league.

With that outcome I couldn’t be more proud of each and every single member of the team.  What they have achieved is a result of their hard work and “never give-up” attitude, but I would also like to thank the coaches and the parents commitment to get the girls to training and match days week after week.

The future is bright, the future is tangerine & black!

We look ahead to next season not knowing exactly when it will start, but if there is one thing I am certain of, is that Fleetdown U12 Girls is a special team and I know they are as excited as I am to have gained promotion and compete at the next level.
